From RYT 200 to RYT 500: How to Do Your 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh

You finished your 200 hour training, you have been teaching for a while, and now you want more depth, better sequencing and the RYT 500 credential next to your name. Many teachers in the USA, UK, Europe and Australia find the same thing: a 300 hour programme at home is often spread over many months of weekends and costs several thousand dollars. A residential 300 hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh fits the same hours into 28 focused days, usually for much less.

This guide is for RYT-200 teachers outside India. It explains how the 300 hour step works, who is ready for it, what the training in Rishikesh involves, and how to plan the trip.

How RYT 500 Works: 200 + 300 Hours

Yoga Alliance offers two main teacher designations: RYT 200 and RYT 500. You can reach the 500 level in two ways:

  • One 500 hour course at a registered RYS 500 school. See our 500 hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh.
  • 200 + 300: you already hold a 200 hour certificate and add a 300 hour advanced training at a registered RYS 300 school. This is the route most working teachers choose.

The 300 hour course does not need to be at the same school as your 200 hour course. Both just need to be Yoga Alliance registered. Yoga Alliance also asks for logged teaching experience before you can upgrade to RYT 500, so start recording your classes now if you aren’t already. Check the current requirements on Yoga Alliance’s website before you apply. If you haven’t registered at the 200 level yet, follow our step-by-step RYT-200 registration guide first.

Are You Ready for a 300 Hour Training?

There is no fixed rule. In our experience, teachers get the most out of the course when at least three of these are true:

  • You completed your 200 hour training at least 6–12 months ago.
  • You teach regularly, even if it is only one or two classes a week, and you know where your teaching feels thin.
  • You practise on your own several times a week, not only when you teach.
  • You want to understand the why behind practices such as pranayama, bandhas, kriyas and philosophy, not just more poses.

Still deciding between levels? Our comparison of 200 hour vs 300 hour yoga teacher training covers the differences in detail.

Why Teachers Abroad Choose Rishikesh for Their 300 Hours

  • Full immersion instead of weekends: one month of focused study, rather than a course spread across most of a year.
  • Cost: the fee covers tuition, 28 nights’ accommodation and meals, which is often less than the tuition alone for a 300 hour programme in many Western cities.
  • Lineage and setting: you study pranayama, kriya and philosophy where these traditions are still a living practice, with sunrise at Kunjapuri, meditation in Vashishta Cave and evening Ganga Aarti as part of the course.
  • Career return: advanced training lets you run workshops, mentor new teachers and charge more per class. Our yoga teacher salary guide shows how pay changes with experience and specialisation.

Planning the Trip: What’s Different for a 28-Day Course

  • Visa: a 28-day course plus travel days uses almost all of a 30-day e-Tourist visa, and the 30 days are counted from the day you arrive. Most teachers apply for the 1-year multiple-entry e-Tourist visa for a buffer. Read our visa guide for yoga teacher training in India.
  • Getting here: fly into Delhi, then take a short domestic flight to Dehradun (DED). The full route, timings and arrival tips are in our step-by-step booking guide for students coming from abroad, and they apply to the 300 hour course too.
  • Timing: October to April is the most comfortable season. See our best time to train in Rishikesh guide.
  • Your students at home: arrange cover for your classes early, and tell your regular students what you will bring back. Teachers who share their trip on social media often come home to fuller classes.

How to Choose a 300 Hour School in Rishikesh (Checklist)

At 300 hours you are paying for depth, not just a certificate. Ask every school you are considering, including us, these questions before you pay a deposit:

  1. Is the school an RYS 300 with Yoga Alliance? Check the official directory. An RYS 200 listing alone is not enough for the 300 hour course to count towards RYT 500.
  2. Who teaches the advanced subjects? Ask for the names of the teachers leading pranayama, philosophy and anatomy, and how long they have taught them.
  3. How many students are in a batch? Adjustments and teaching feedback get diluted once groups go past 15–20.
  4. How is teaching practice assessed? You should teach, get feedback and teach again, not just sit through lectures.
  5. Is the syllabus published? A real advanced syllabus names the series, techniques and texts covered.
  6. Are the deposit, transfer and refund terms in writing?

Our longer list of warning signs applies at every level: 10 yoga school red flags to check before you pay a deposit.

After the Course: Registering and Using Your RYT 500

  1. Get your certificate at the end of the course, after the practical and theory assessments.
  2. Log in to your Yoga Alliance account, add the 300 hour training, and add your logged teaching hours.
  3. Upgrade your designation to RYT 500 once Yoga Alliance has verified everything, and update your website, studio bios and social profiles.
  4. Change what you offer: teachers commonly add workshops (pranayama, inversions, philosophy), private sessions and mentoring for new teachers. These usually pay more than standard group classes.
  5. Check local rules: some countries have their own registration or insurance requirements for yoga teachers. Our guide to whether a yoga certification is valid abroad covers the main countries, and our comparison of Yoga Alliance vs India’s Yoga Certification Board explains the two systems.

Bring a New Skill Home: Add Sound Healing

Many 300 hour students stay on for an extra few days to add a specialism they can offer at home. Singing-bowl sound healing is one of the easiest to fit into existing classes. Read how to add sound healing to your yoga classes or see our sound healing course in Rishikesh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do my 300 hour training at a different school from my 200 hour?

Yes. Your 200 hour and 300 hour trainings can be at different schools, as long as both are registered with Yoga Alliance. Together they count towards the RYT 500 designation.

How long is the 300 hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh?

At Jeevatman Yogshala the 300 hour course is 28 days, residential, and starts on the 3rd of every month.

How much does the 300 hour course cost?

USD 1,150 in a shared twin room or USD 1,250 in a private room. This includes 28 nights’ accommodation, two sattvic meals a day, the yoga kit and course excursions. A USD 200 deposit reserves your place.

Which visa should I get for a 28-day course?

Most teachers choose India’s 1-year multiple-entry e-Tourist visa. A 30-day visa leaves very little buffer for travel days around a 28-day course.

Do I need teaching experience before a 300 hour training?

We don’t require a minimum number of teaching hours to join, but you must have completed a 200 hour training. Teachers who have taught for 6–12 months usually benefit most, and Yoga Alliance asks for logged teaching experience before you can upgrade to RYT 500.

Is the 300 hour course physically demanding?

Yes. It includes the Ashtanga Vinyasa Secondary Series and advanced Hatha. Our teachers offer modifications, but you should have a steady personal practice before you arrive.
