Quick answer: Yes. A 200-hour yoga certification earned in India is accepted worldwide provided the school is a Registered Yoga School (RYS 200) with Yoga Alliance. Recognition follows the school’s registration, not the country it sits in. Studios and insurers almost never ask where you trained — they ask for your RYT 200 credential, your yoga certification, and proof of liability insurance.
Whether a yoga certification is valid abroad is the single question that stops most international students from booking a teacher training in India. It is a fair question, and the honest answer has a condition attached to it. Below is the condition, the country-by-country reality, and a five-minute verification process you should run on any school — including ours — before you transfer a deposit.

The thing almost nobody explains: recognition follows the school, not the country
There is no international government body that licenses yoga teachers. Yoga is an unregulated profession in most of the world. What exists instead is a voluntary registry — Yoga Alliance being the largest — which sets a curriculum standard and lists schools that meet it.
When a school in Rishikesh is registered as an RYS 200, it has submitted its syllabus, contact hours, and faculty credentials to the same standard as a school in California or Berlin. The yoga certification you receive is therefore equivalent in the only sense that matters: it makes you eligible to register as an RYT 200.
This cuts both ways, and it is the part you need to hear:
- A yoga certification from an unregistered school in India is close to worthless internationally. India has hundreds of schools. Not all are registered. Some display a Yoga Alliance logo they are not entitled to use.
- A yoga certification from an unregistered school in Bali or Portugal is equally worthless. The problem is not India. The problem is unverified schools, everywhere.
Definitions you will meet along the way
RYS 200 (Registered Yoga School). The school. A training provider whose 200-hour curriculum has been reviewed and registered with Yoga Alliance. Only an RYS can produce graduates eligible for RYT status.
RYT 200 (Registered Yoga Teacher). You, after you graduate from an RYS 200 and complete your own registration and fee with Yoga Alliance. Graduating does not make you an RYT automatically — you must apply.
YACEP (Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider). A provider approved to deliver continuing education hours that count toward the CE requirement RYTs must maintain. This is the registration that matters for shorter specialist courses such as sound healing.
Yoga Alliance Professionals (UK). A separate, UK-based organisation. Similar name, different body, different membership. If you intend to build a UK career, check their criteria directly rather than assuming your US Yoga Alliance registration transfers.
Liability insurance. The real gate. In practice, no studio will let you teach without it, and insurers set their own acceptance criteria for qualifications. Confirm with an insurer in your own country before you book a training anywhere.
How to verify any yoga school in five minutes
- Go to the Yoga Alliance directory yourself. Do not trust a logo on a website. Search the school by name in the official directory and confirm the RYS 200 listing is live and current.
- Match the legal name. Some schools operate under a trading name that differs from their registration. If you cannot find them, ask them to send you the exact registered name and school ID.
- Ask which faculty member is the lead trainer and what their own registration level is (E-RYT 500 is the usual lead-trainer standard).
- Ask to see a sample yoga certification. It should carry the school name, the RYS designation, the hours, the dates, and a signature.
- Email your intended insurer in your home country with the school name and ask, in one line, whether a 200-hour yoga certification from that RYS would be accepted for a policy. Their written answer is worth more than any marketing page — including this one.
If a school hesitates at any of these five steps, that is your answer.

Here is the pattern we notice with graduates who go home and teach successfully, which has nothing to do with the yoga certification itself: the students who get hired are the ones who taught real humans before they left. A yoga certification opens the door to an audition class. It does not pass the audition. That is why our 22-day 200-hour course puts every student in front of the group to teach, repeatedly, and gives correction on cueing and sequencing rather than only on the student’s own asana practice.
The second pattern: graduates who arrive home with one specialism attached to the 200-hour — sound healing, yin, aerial, prenatal — get booked faster than those with a general yoga certification alone, because they can offer a studio something the existing roster does not already have.
Practical tips before you book
- Budget for the registration fee. Yoga Alliance charges an application fee plus annual membership. This is separate from your course fee, at every school in the world.
- Get a yoga certification with your legal passport name on it. A nickname on a yoga certification creates problems with insurers and visa-sponsoring employers later.
- Keep your syllabus and contact-hour breakdown. Some national bodies ask for it when assessing an overseas qualification.
- Add CPR and First Aid at home. Australia requires nationally accredited certificates; many US and UK studios expect them too. Do this in your own country — it is cheaper and locally valid.
- Do not choose a school on price alone. A course far below the market rate usually means larger batches, less teaching practice, or no registration at all.
Frequently asked questions about a yoga certification valid abroad
Is Yoga Alliance a government body?
No. It is a private, voluntary membership registry. No country requires it by law. It is, however, the standard most studios and insurers use as shorthand for “this person completed a credible 200 hours.”
Do I have to register as an RYT after my course?
No — teaching without RYT registration is legal in most countries. But many studios, gyms, retreat companies and online platforms list RYT 200 as a minimum in job adverts, so it removes friction.
Will a UK studio accept my Indian yoga certification?
Independent studios generally will, provided you hold valid UK insurance. Larger gym chains sometimes prefer a Level 3 or CIMSPA-recognised route. If a gym career in the UK is your goal, check that requirement before booking, not after.
Can I teach in Australia with a 200-hour from India?
AUSactive publishes a Provisional tier at 200 hours and accepts a Yoga Australia or Yoga Alliance approved 200-hour certificate alongside nationally accredited CPR and First Aid. Overseas qualifications outside the approved list are reviewed case by case with supporting evidence.
Is an online 200-hour equivalent?
For registration purposes Yoga Alliance has permitted online hours under specific conditions; for hiring purposes, many studio owners still weigh in-person contact hours and supervised teaching practice more heavily. If you can only train online, choose a course with live, supervised practicums.
Does a yoga certification expire?
The yoga certification does not. Your RYT registration lapses if you stop paying annual dues or fail to log continuing education hours. Continuing education is where a YACEP-registered course such as sound healing does double duty.
